Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal by David Konow,

Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal by David Konow,
"Bang your head! Metal Health'll drive you mad!" -- Quiet Riot Like an episode of VH1's Behind the Music on steroids, Bang Your Head is an epic history of every band and every performer that has proudly worn the Heavy Metal badge. Whether headbanging is your guilty pleasure or you firmly believe that this much-maligned genre has never received the respect it deserves, Bang Your Head is a must-read that pays homage to a music that's impossible to ignore, especially when being blasted through a sixteen-inch woofer. Charting the genesis of early metal with bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden; the rise of metal to the top of the Billboard charts and heavy MTV rotation featuring the likes of Def Leppard and Metallica; hitting its critical peak with bands like Guns N' Roses; disgrace during the "hair metal" '80s; and a demise fueled by the explosion of the Seattle grunge scene and the "alternative" revolution, Bang Your Head is as funny as it is informative and proves once and for all that there is more to metal than sin, sex, and spandex. To write this exhaustive history, David Konow spent three years interviewing the bands, wives, girlfriends, ex-wives, groupies, managers, record company execs, and anyone who was or is a part of the metal scene, including many of the band guys often better known for their escapades and bad behavior than for their musicianship. Nothing is left unsaid in this jaw-dropping, funny, and entertaining chronicle of power ballads, outrageous outfits, big hair, bigger egos, and testosterone-drenched debauchery.

Includes: "Alice," "Another Woman," "Crimes And Misdemeanors," "September" and "Shadows And Fog" "Alice" - "Hilarious and romantic, serious and exuberantly satiric" (The New York Times), "Alice" is the whimsical tale of a pampered New York socialite fumbling toward love, enlightenment...and just the right acupuncturist. Starring Mia Farrow, William Hurt, Joe Mantegna and Alec Baldwin, "Alice" "glides effortlessly" (New York) from reality to daydream, and from memory to magic, revealing the intricate and unfathomable unity of human bonds. "Alice" "make[s] us believe that fairy tales can still happen" (Newsweek)! "Another Woman" - A 50-year old professor of philosophy deludes herself into thinking she's got a very good life. Suddenly, through some strange, almost magical events, it all becomes unraveled. "Crimes And Misdemeanors" - "Poignant, penetrating [and] scathingly hilarious" (L.B. Press Telegram), "Crimes And Misdemeanors" is a deftly rendered tale about the complexity of human choices and the moral microcosms they represent. Showcasing Allen's brilliant grasp of the link between the funny and the fatal, his 19th movie is "one of the watershed films of his career" (Los Angeles Times). "September" - Woody Allen delivers a haunting, "superbly constructed" (The Hollywood Reporter) film that examines the intricate world of human emotions and the delicate threads that hold them together. Beautifully acted by an all-star cast, including Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Dianne Wiest, Denholm Elliott, Elaine Stritch and Jack Warden, "September" illustrates "some of Allen's most powerfully ironic dialogue in years" (Screen International). "Shadows And Fog" - "Lovely, poignant" (The Wall Street Journal) and laugh-out-loud funny, "Shadows And Fog" confirms Woody Allen's genius with its brilliant portrait of the hopeless - but hilarious - tragicomedy of human existence.

Iron Maiden (doom band) - In 1964, Barry Skeels, Steve Drewett, Chris Rose and Alan Hooker formed an acoustic band in Basildon, Essex that eventually evolved into a band called Iron Maiden (unrelated to the currently famous Iron Maiden). By 1966, the lineup was Skeels (bass), Drewett (vocals/harmonies), Rose (lead guitar), Tom Loates (rhythm guitar) and Stan Gillem (drums); they played Rolling Stones and blues numbers under the name "Growth".
